Three employees of NLMK Indiana, located at the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor, were injured on Wednesday in an accident at the facility.
According to a statement released by the company, at 6:15 p.m. the three workers were dispatched to the electric arc furnace melt shop on a repair call involving an electrical issue.
“In the process of troubleshooting the problem, the three employees sustained injuries associated with an arc flash,” the statement said.
All three were transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Joseph Gazarkiewicz, director of human resources and safety for NLMK Indiana, told the Chesterton Tribune today that the three should be released from hospital soon.
The company did not release the employees’ names.
“NLMK Indiana continues to conduct an investigation as to the cause of the accident and is cooperating with IOSHA personnel,” the statement said.
